Once we have course dates confirmed we will contact you to offer a place. No payment is required at this stage.
Full course details are included below...
This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities. The course runs from 9am until 5:00pm each day and is delivered by qualified RYA Powerboat /Safety Boat Instructors.
It includes techniques for rescuing people and various types of craft in different situations. Course elements are highly interactive and FUN, but with a serious message. Elements of race management and mark laying are also included. Sessions are mostly scenario-based and hands-on, out on the water.
Our venue, Cheddar reservoir, is ideal for powerboat training as it offers enhanced safety and accessibility compared with similar courses in coastal locations.
Students must already hold the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate.
How Much Will it Cost?
The 2-day course fee for non-members is £160.00 , including the RYA course text "Safety Boat Handbook".
For current BCYC members the fee is reduced to just £80.00
Payment can be made by Cheque or bank transfer - you will be sent Payment Instructions by E mail
What benefits are there in completing the RYA Safety Boat course?
On completion of the course you will be able to provide safety cover in a racing or training environment and deal competently with any rescue situations that arise.
Are there minimum age requirements?
Yes, to meet RYA requirements, the minimum age is 16..
On successful completion, certificates will be issued showing course completion on INLAND waters
What should I wear?
We spend most of the day afloat, so please bring appropriate clothing for the weather - warm waterproofs for the winter, plenty of sun cream in the summer, wet shoes/old trainers and a buoyancy aid (although we can provide one if you do not have your own).
Rescue scenarios form the majority of this course, so you may need to enter the water. For this reason either a dry suit or a wet suit are recommended.
How many others will be on the course with me?
We normally arrange a student to instructor ratio of just 2:1, to provide students with the maximum amount of time behind the wheel
Will there be a lunch break?
Tea and Coffee are provided, but you should bring a packed lunch. Usually the Club's galley is closed on Saturdays. We take a lunch break of 30 minutes.
Are there any books I can look at beforehand?
The RYA Safety Boat Handbook booklet G16 is included with the course.
Do the organisers need any other information from me?
We need you to tell us about any medical conditions that might affect your safe participation on the course. Your instructor will need details of any medical treatment being received, or if you suffer from epilepsy, giddy spells, asthma, diabetes, heart condition, back problems or anything else you believe may affect you during your time with us. Please note that medical conditions need not prevent you from taking part, but it is important we are aware. If you are in any doubt about your fitness to take part in a practical powerboat course, your GP should be able to advise.
How can I contact the organisers with any questions?
You can send email queries to our Powerboat training co-ordinator
