Event Details

This 2-day RYA course is designed to equip competent powerboat drivers with the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities. It is also a pre-requisite for the RYA Senior Instructor course.

It includes preparation, boat handling, dinghy rescue, windsurfer rescue, kayak or canoe rescue, towing, end-of-day procedures, safety, suitability of craft, local factors, communication, rescuing other water users.

The course runs from 9:00am until 5:00pm each day (minimum 16 hours duration) and most sessions will be out on the water, hands-on, tackling different rescue scenarios. Our venue, Cheddar reservoir, is ideal for powerboat training as it offers enhanced safety and accessibility compared with similar courses in coastal locations.

The course is delivered by qualified RYA Powerboat and Safety Boat Instructors on behalf of Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club, an RYA Recognised Training Centre. The maximum student / Instructor ratio will be 6:1 (2 boats).

** All students must possess a valid RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate before enrolling **

Note: If you are a new member looking for the "Club Safety Boat course" that course has now been renamed the "Powerboat Introduction course for Club Members"
THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT COURSE FOR YOU!

How Much Will it Cost?

For current BCYC members the fee is reduced to just £120.00

Online payment through EventBrite is required.

Are there minimum age requirements?

Yes, to meet RYA requirements, the minimum age for this course is 16.

What should I wear?

We spend most of the day afloat, so please bring appropriate clothing for the weather. A dry suit or wet suit, with additional layers in cold weather, is recommended. YOU WILL PROBABLY GET WET!
W

Evidence of your RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate will be required. Please bring this along with you at the start of the course.
A pen, pencil and notebook (waterproof if possible) will also be useful.

Do the organisers need any other information from me?

We need you to tell us about any medical conditions that might affect your safe participation on the course. Your instructor will need details of any medical treatment being received, or if you suffer from epilepsy, giddy spells, asthma, diabetes, heart condition, back problems or anything else you believe may affect you during your time with us. Please note that medical conditions need not prevent you from taking part, but it is important we are aware. If you are in any doubt about your fitness to take part in a practical powerboat course, your GP should be able to advise.
