About this event

The winter solstice represents a turning point when the darkness is at its zenith. It is, however, also the time when we can look forward to the light coming back. This sacred encounter is a celebration of this sure hope which is symbolic of a deeper hope for life, allowing us to hold on when it might otherwise seem hopeless. We may or may not observe setting sun, but we know that it is happening all the same.

Before you come you might like to look back over the past year and look forward to the next as you think about what gives you hope.

The walk is a circular tour of Wansfell which rises above Ambleside, and on a clear day, affords wonderful views of the lakes and fells as the sun sets to the Southwest. The distance is 6.07 km with 480m of ascent following mountain paths with moderately steep climbs.

We will leave promptly at 2 p.m. and aim to return by 5 p.m. Meet at Waterhead Car Park NY 37660 03284. ///daffodils.pelting.juror

Please bring Christmas snacks to share AND A TORCH. At the end of the walk we will visit a local cafe or pub for further refreshment and to continue our conversations. Please read the FAQs which contain important information.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring?

Please ensure that you bring a proper waterproof jacket and trousers, spare warm top, hat, gloves, walking shoes, food to share for lunch and a good sense of humour for those days when the delights of nature are less apparent. Most importantly please bring a torch

Is it religious?

Sacred encounters are open to people of all faiths or none, whilst being informed by the Christian faith. It is religious in the sense that we seek spiritual engagement, but it does not require conformity to a rigid set of beliefs, and the only requirement is a curiousity and openness of mind.

What are sacred encounters?

Sacred Encounters are quarterly gatherings in the Lake District to celebrate the sacred wonder, beauty and awe to be found in nature as a community of friends. Each encounter embodies a Christian principle that enhances and sustains life in the everyday.

Who runs Sacred Encounters?

Sacred Encounters is an initiative of Beyond The View - https://beyondtheview.org.uk

What level of fitness do I need?

All of the walks are modest in length (generally up to 7 km) and typically utilise good paths. However, some walks may involve rougher ground and steep slopes. The event information includes details on the walk to help you decide on their suitability for you.

Will you look after me?

The expectation is that you will only engage in activities where you are able to look after yourself and any dependents (under 18 year olds and pets). Please see the description for each Sacred Encounter to assess your own ability, and anyone attending with you against the risks encountered.
