Event description

Description

These sessions are aimed primarily at our young riders. The incredible ability and talent within Scottish young riders at the moment is allowing them to ride more technical trails with challenging terrain . Their fitness and the capabilities of their bikes, is allowing riders to travel longer distances self-sufficiently. We have seen examples of young riders are finding themselves in difficulty and needing help. Also recent incidents have shown the importance of wearing the correct protection and knowing what to do in an emergency.

The first of the sessions, on the 25th September, will look at a variety of issues to help develop awareness of the steps we should all follow to prepare for a ride, including look at basic bike checks and understand the connection between weather and kit. Sharing top tips, helmet and body protection suitability will be investigated too. The session will be interactive and will include,

  • Planning a ride, what should be considered –conditions, weather, trail management, time of day, lights, food, energy, water, etc.

  • Using weather forecasts and maps of the area to plan a ride & locate yourself in the event of an emergency.

  • Importance of ICE numbers and knowing where members of your group keep them

  • Leader injury protocol will be discussed and ideas shared about how to cope if the leader is no longer able to lead

The second session on 2nd October from 18:30 - 21:00, will cover emergency first aid. It will be interactive and build on existing skills and knowledge - everyone has some experience with first aid even if they have done no training!

A simple, well practiced system to look at symptoms and treatment will be demonstrated - the aim is to become "Advanced at the Basics".

This session will look at the following:-

  • Collapse + CPR + Choking

  • Bleeding problems

  • Bone damage

  • Head and spinal injury

  • Helmet removal - when is this necessary and how to do it

  • Helping casualties who have crashed and are in a difficult position (wrapped round a tree!)

  • Medical emergencies - asthma etc.
