SAFEGUARDING ADULTS: INVOLVING PEOPLE AND USING AN OUTCOMES FOCUSSED-APPROACH

RESEARCH MESSAGES WORKSHOP

Introduction:

Safeguarding in England has changes under the Care Act; where the focus before was on meeting timescales and following processes, the Care Act encourages a more person-centred and outcome focussed approach to safeguarding.

This workshop is aimed at:

Practitioners and Managers working in Safeguarding

The Aims of the Workshop:

This workshop will give an evidence-informed overview of why involving people in an outcome-focussed approach is important in safeguarding, and how such an approach can work in practice. It will draw from learning from the national programme of work and evaluations of Making Safeguarding Personal, and support progress in developing your local authorities own approach to embedding MSP.

The objectives of the workshop are to:

  • Describe the key changes to safeguarding under the Care Act
  • Outline what an outcome-focussed approach to safeguarding is and the differences between this and the current approach.
  • Identify your role in making the new outcomes approach to safeguarding a reality
  • Meaningfully discuss outcomes with people
  • Measure and review outcomes
  • Identify possible barriers to using the new outcomes approach and plan how to minimise their impact.
  • Discuss and agree what support and supervision requirements will be required to help implement the outcomes approach.
  • Explain the role of independent advocacy in safeguarding
  • Outline an action plan around how their practice will change in the future to align with the aims of the new strategy.
