Safeguarding and the International Development sector: An introduction to risks and responsibilities for INGOs with Richard Powell

Aims of the training

To increase participants' understanding of the risks and responsibilities facing INGOS in the international development sector as they seek to meet the challenge of being organisations that are safe places for their staff and beneficiaries, including adults, children and vulnerable populations.

Course content and outcomes

  • Global overview of safeguarding risks, including: increased understanding of the level and nature of threat of exploitation, abuse and other failures to safeguard (drawing from both past and current experiences across the sector)

  • Overview of INGO responsibilities and necessary responses to these issues

  • Overview of available resources and learning available

Preparation

A short questionnaire will be sent to all participants before the course to help the trainer prepare relevant content. Please ensure you return this in a timely manner.

About Richard

Richard has 40 years of social work experience including 15 years of international child safeguarding experience with Save the Children, and is committed to using the deep insights and knowledge gained in his distinguished career to enable organisations to become safe.

Richard has had a long involvement with the Save the Children family, most recently as Director of Global Child Safeguarding at Save The Children International (SCI), where he was responsible for introducing the SCI Child Safeguarding Protocol to all member organisations and Save the Children International global offices.

As well as providing global leadership on safeguarding for a large complex organisation, he also deployed to numerous humanitarian responses and had responsibility for Case Management, Investigations and Crisis Management Systems, Auditing, Strategy and Implementation. He also authored policy, standards,
guidance, training and tools. As manager of a global team, and member of the extended global leadership team, he introduced safeguarding and provided support to a number of SCI member organisations.

Richard established the management systems for accountability such as external independent audits and public reports, KPIs and minimum operating standards, as well as undertaking and overseeing case reporting, investigation and management.

Prior to this, Richard was responsible for all aspects of child safeguarding within Save the Children UK’s domestic and international programmes and all departmental activity, including policy development, guidance, training and investigation. He also has lengthy senior level experience in UK social work and probation work fields.
