Description

This course is aimed at staff and governing bodies of primary and secondary schools, staff and governors of further and higher education institutions and school-staff unions.

It will be delivered as a mix of a lecture, case studies, Q&A and general discussion, covering the following aims and objectives:

Safeguarding children: employers’ legal duties and the concept of e-safeguarding

  • Understanding the statutory framework and the impact of the new Social Services and Well Being (Wales) Act 2014
  • Understanding the roles of key stakeholders: local authorities, schools, social services and police
  • Familiarisation with the WAG guidance
  • Understanding what the external referrals process is and how it works
  • awareness of the employment law context: discrimination, trust and confidence, unfair dismissal
  • Understanding the overarching context of vetting and barring issues.

SEN Reform: Additional Learning Needs (Wales) Bill

  • Understanding the changes that will be implemented by the ALN (Wales) Bill
  • Discussing the change from SEN to ALN terminology
  • Consideration of the new ALNCO role
  • Understanding the ramifications of the IDP and abolition of statements of SEN
  • School’s considerable new responsibilities explained
