Event Information

Come along to this event to hear from key figures in the management of counter-terrorism and security locally and nationally and get your questions answered.

Speakers include:

  • Abu Ahmed, Head of Counter Terrorism Communications and Engagement, Home Office
  • Andy Ferris, South West Counter Terrorism Unit, Devon and Cornwall Police
  • Kelly Pullin, Regional Lead for Prevent, Office for Students

The University has a statutory obligation to have “due regard” to the duty to prevent individuals from being drawn into terrorism – the Prevent duty. This is primarily about safeguarding our students, staff and visitors.

This year’s University Prevent Event will focus on how the University works in partnership with various external agencies at the local and national level to ensure we have due regard to the Prevent duty. It will pay particular attention to the safeguarding approach that is a key feature of the work undertaken by both the University and its partners.

Under the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 the Prevent duty places an obligation on higher education institutions to have "due regard to the need to prevent individuals from being drawn into terrorism". Compliance with the duty in England is monitored by the Office for Students (OfS).

More information on the duty, the University’s approach, and linked policies can be found on our Prevent duty webpage.
