This session is aimed at managers and staff within organisations who are responsible for recruiting staff to work with children and young people in children's home and supported accommodation. Safer recruitment is a set of practices to help make sure your staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children and young people. It's a vital part of creating a safe and positive environment and committing to keep children safe from harm.

Learning Outcomes

• Understanding regulatory expectations for safer recruitment in children’s homes/supported accommodation

• Understanding context and the implementation of Choosing with Care (Warner Report)

• Apply safe, effective and compliant approaches in the following areas:

  • Advertising
  • Shortlisting
  • Interviewing (competency, motivation and values)
  • Home visits/advance visits
  • Written exercises, group exercises
  • Involving children in recruitment and selection
  • Dealing with DBS disclosures
  • References
  • Induction/probation
