Safety In London’s Public Spaces – Model Talk

Join us for an interactive model talk exploring the importance of design in promoting safety and gender inclusion in London's public spaces.

Join Kathryn Timmins and Betty Owoo, members of the Greater London Authority's Design Unit, for a session exploring the GLA's recently published Good Growth by Design research on the safety of women, girls and gender diverse people in public space in the city. This research forms part of the GLA’s work championing gender inclusion in mayoral funded projects.

The safety of women and girls is a key mayoral priority, with Sadiq Khan publishing a refreshed Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Strategy for London in 2022. The strategy recognises that the built environment is vital in supporting the safety

of women, girls and gender diverse people and eradicating VAWG in London. London is also committed to the United Nation’s Women Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces global initiative.

Using the London Model, Kathryn and Betty will introduce the concept of safety in public space through three lenses, and how inclusive design can support the safety of women, girls and gender diverse people. They will then use three case studies to illustrate how gender inclusive design principles can be foregrounded in projects at all project stages - from their initiation, through to design, making and their eventual use.
