Sailfish Taster Session - an opportunity for children to try out sailing
Fri 14 April 2017, 18:00 – 20:00 BST
This event is an opportunity for children aged 8 years and over to come sailing and find out more about joining Burwain Sailing Club. An experienced sailor will take groups of three children at a time for a short sail of about 20 minutes around the lake. Children will be able to enjoy the sensation of being afloat in a small sailing dinghy; this may include having a go at steering, trimming the sails and helping to keep the boat balanced. Once back at the clubhouse we will let children and their parents know all about learning to sail on our regular Friday evening Sailfish sessions for junior and youth sailing. We can also answer questions about the whole family learning to sail and the opportunities for training and membership.
Light refreshments will be available to purchase at the clubhouse.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
This event is open to children between 8 and 18 years old. A parent or guardian is required to remain at the club house for the duration of the event to supervise their children whilst ashore.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring warm clothing to wear in the boat and a change of clothing/footwear in case you get wet. We will provide buoyancy aids for children to wear in the boat.
How much does the event cost?
This is a free event. If your child wishes to learn how to sail then membership of the club costs from £85 per year.
Do I need to be able to swim?
This is not a requirement because buoyancy aids must be worn by all participants at all times whilst on a boat or on the jetty. We will do our best not to capsize during the taster session, but there will be safety boats on standby just in case. However, for any children wanting to take up sailing after their taster session then some confidence in and around water is helpful. Learning to sail includes how to right a boat after a capsize so if children join the club they will eventually get wet as part of the training.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
The sailing club's car park will be available for non-members taking part in the taster session. The sailing club is within walking/cycling distance of Colne or Foulridge.
Is Burwain Sailing Club qualified to teach sailing?
Yes, we are accredited by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) as a training centre to deliver sailing training under the RYA's National and Youth training schemes.
