About this event
*IMPORTANT NOTE: This tour is offered in ONE LANGUAGE ONLY. Please make sure you BOOK THE CORRECT LANGUAGE on the day that it is available.
The Saints and Sinners Tour looks at the history of York through the eyes of those who shaped it.
Meet the King, the Bishop, the Highwayman, the Chocolatier, the Martyr, the Terrorist, the Emperor, and the Artist.
Do you know their names? What do you know about their lives? Where can you find their traces in the city? Were they really saints… Or sinners..?
I am your guide: Irene, an art historian born in Madrid and living in York for the last seven years.
Join me on a fascinating walk around York to discover all this and more!
Frequently asked questions
Yes, due to limited numbers (York is not a city for big groups of people, especially during the weekend!). Bookings will close 4 hours prior to the event.
Between 1.5 to 2 hours, with approximately 30 mins of total walking time.
We start at Micklegate Bar, the big gate on the city walls on the West side of the city centre (corner of Bar Lane with Micklegate). We finish in Exhibition Square, outside York Art Gallery (ticket to the gallery not included).
I will do all I can to ensure the walk is accessible to everyone. We won't be going up or down steps or platforms. However, we will cross some uneven ground, as York is well known for its cobbles and bumpy roads.
Three of the stops (1st, 2nd and 4th) don't have any seats nearby. The rest, either they do have places to sit (on a bench or wall) close to them, or there are some in the nearby area so that, if anyone needs to sit down, we can stand a little further from the location in question.
There will be 8 stops, one per character (saint or sinner).
I politely ask you to wait until the tour has finished. However, if you or anyone in your party really need it, please let me know and I will point you towards the nearest public toilet. If the situation occurred, I would kindly ask the rest of the group for their patience in waiting.
Yes! It's open to all ages. Please be aware that some of the things mentioned (like torture, execution or nudes in paintings) might not be appropriate for very young children. However, I will do my best to adapt my discourse to the needs of each group.
Tons of them. There is a saying that York has more pubs than days in the year. I haven't counted them myself, but there are dozens of options for food and drink around the area, and we finish in a very central part of the town. Any questions please ask!
You can, unless they are too difficult :P Just kidding! Fire away, and I will do my best to answer. If I don't know the answer, I will find it out for you.
Full refunds are offered up to 1 day before the event. Tours may be cancelled last minute due to extreme weather conditions, sickness or personal circumstances. If this happened, tickets will be refunded or exchanged for another day. Every effort will be made to give substantial notice.
Wearing a mask in public spaces is currently not a requirement in the UK, but if you prefer to wear one, you are more than welcome to do so: the city centre is busy, and sometimes crowded. ANY GUEST DISPLAYING CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS IS ADVISED NOT TO JOIN THE TOUR; a full refund will be issued.
