Duration: 1.5 hours
Format: Regular sessions combining short story discussion, group writing exercises, and set homework prompts.
Who is it for?: Keen writers looking to sharpen their skills, build consistency, and engage in thoughtful feedback and creative exploration.
Structure of Each Session:
Check in (10 mins)
Space to settle down and settle in.
Short Story Discussion (20 mins)
Each meet, a short story will be shared in advance for members to read. We’ll begin the session by discussing its themes, structure, style, and what we can learn from it as writers.
Group Writing Exercises (30 mins)
A series of guided exercises designed to encourage creativity, explore craft techniques & lean into experimental writing. These vary from themed free-writes to more focused prompts around character, dialogue, or setting.
Homework feedback + prompt (30 mins)
Space to discuss pieces submitted from the previous prompt.
At the end of each session, members receive a fresh writing prompt with guidance and inspiration for a 500–1000 word piece to be completed by the next meeting.

A: No! Salt Folke is for anyone who enjoys writing as a hobby or creative outlet. You don’t need to be published or have any formal training; just some experience dabbling in writing & a desire to develope your craft.
A: No, these sessions are free; however we do ask for attendees to support the venue by buying drinks/snacks, as they are kindly hosting us without cost.
A: We love variety ? Each week’s short story and prompts may explore different genres; literary fiction, speculative, horror, contemporary, etc, so you can explore new styles & find what excites you.
A: No problem! You’ll still get the short stories and homework prompts in our WhatsApp group, so you can keep writing at your own pace & book back in for a meet whenever you like.
A: Sharing can happen during the session, via our WhatsApp group; both, or neither. Sessions are flexible and you’re welcome to just listen if that feels better for you– no pressure at all.
A: We suggest setting aside some time ahead of each to read the short story before our session & to complete a 500–1000 word piece from the homework prompt.
A: Yes, but sharing is always voluntary. We aim for a warm, supportive atmosphere where feedback is constructive and respectful– kind conduct is a club rule. It’s a great way to learn from one another & grow together.
A: Just a love of writing & a want to connect with others. Bring a notebook/pen, laptop, or device for your writing exercises, plus a willingness to read, write, and chat about stories.
Spaces are limited; please only book if you can make the session. We ask members to cancel with at least 48 hours notice if they can no longer attend, to allow for someone else the opportunity. SFWC reserves the right to bar no-shows and disruptive members at their discretion.
