Event description

Description

Discover a theatre that 'looks gorgeous, like a jewel box' (The Guardian).

As the winter months drew in over London, Shakespeare's company of players moved indoors to more private, intimate theatres, such as the Blackfriars Playhouse. Opened in 2014, and named after the Globe's founder, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse explores the experiences of actors and audiences in those indoor playhouses in contrast to the more expansive, public spaces of the open-air theatres like the Globe.

Discover the impact on Shakespeare's writing in his late plays, the role of music, how the intricate details of the theatre were painstakingly researched from contemporary Tudor and Jacobean buildings such as Hatfield House, and wonder at the remarkable craftsmanship.

Your visit will include entrance to the Globe Exhibition (with free audio guide) and a 30-minute guided tour of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
