Description

Former US ambassador to the United Nations, adviser to President Barack Obama and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Samantha Power will be in conversation with Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland.

Described by Obama as “one of the foremost thinkers of foreign policy”, Irish-born Power began her career as a war correspondent, covering the Yugoslav Wars for multiple international publications. In 2003 she won a Pulitzer Prize for her book, A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide, and her critiques of US foreign policy caught the attention of Barack Obama; in 2005, she was recruited onto his staff. Following Obama’s succession to the Oval Office, Power became his human rights adviser and, in 2013, the youngest ever US ambassador to the UN.

In a new memoir, The Education of an Idealist, she chronicles her remarkable life from a childhood in Dublin to the streets of war-torn Bosnia, and on to the White House Situation Room and the world of high-stakes diplomacy. With frank insight into American geopolitics, she writes with evocative energy, reminding us that even in this time of deep division, we all still have the ability to advance the cause of human dignity.

Tickets to this event are £20 or £35 with a copy of The Education of an Idealist (RRP £20).
