A new 6 week in depth series with Senior Buddhist Teacher Chelvi in Canterbury

Emptiness is the way things actually are, as opposed to how we currently perceive them to be. Much of our emotional turmoil—our strong attachments and deep aversions—arises because we don't understand this profound truth. We become entangled in what we find attractive or repelled by what seems unattractive, mistakenly believing these qualities exist inherently in the objects themselves. In reality, these characteristics depend entirely on our perception.

By recognising that phenomena do not exist in the fixed and solid way we currently see them, we begin to loosen our grasping. This insight allows us to experience life with more freedom, lightness, and joy. It opens the door to a radically different and liberating way of relating to ourself, others, and the world around us.

The Buddha taught emptiness at many levels, culminating in the highest expression of this wisdom in his Tantric teachings—the union of appearance and emptiness. Gaining experience of this subtle and transformative view helps us to integrate a spacious and joyful awareness into every aspect of daily life. It becomes possible to let go of long-held anger and hurt, to see our life afresh from a spiritual perspective, and to uncover a completely pure and peaceful way of viewing the world.

In this series of classes, senior Buddhist teacher Chelvi will guide us through these life-changing teachings, based on the extraordinarily clear and accessible presentations of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Chelvi will help us explore how to practically apply the wisdom of emptiness to our everyday lives.

Sessions last for an hour and a quarter to allow for more discussion.

They are suitable for those with more advanced experience of Buddhist meditation. Classes can be attended on a drop-in basis, as each session is self-contained. Light refreshments will be served before or after the class.

About this series: This weekly series aims to teach effective, more in depth meditation-based solutions to everyday problems taken from the Kadampa Buddhist tradition.
