Sandwich Bay Walk and Talks
Date and time
Enjoy an exciting day of talks and guided walks around Sandwich Bay NNR, led by Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust and Kent Wildlife Trust.
About this event
Experience the wildlife rich landscape of Sandwich Bay National Nature Reserve and beyond on an exciting day of walks and talks, led by Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust and Kent Wildlife Trust.
There will be a separate morning and afternoon guided walk starting from different locations. You can book for one or both sessions.
In the morning session(10am-12pm), you can enjoy an informative talk followed by a guided walk around Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory, with the chance to see nesting birds and migrants, rare orchids and some of the 1000 species of moths found in this unique mosaic of habitats. This is a fantastic opportunity to talk to resident wardens with expert knowledge on the local flora and fauna and to find out more about their role in encouraging wildlife to Sandwich Bay.
In the afternoon session(1:30pm-3pm), you can join Kent Wildlife Trust’s Protected Area Wardens for a guided walk by the sea, where we will explore Kent’s only ancient sand dune habitat, look out for summer wading birds on the nutrient rich mudflats and hopefully spot some of the local birds of prey. Learn about how we manage this National Nature Reserve and protect the rare birdlife and our local seal colony, and find out what you can do to help ensure Sandwich and Pegwell NNR remains a safe haven for this fascinating wildlife.
The morning talk and walk will run from Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory, Guilford Rd. The afternoon event starts from Sandwich Bay Estate car park, Prince's Drive (near Prince's Golf Club). Following the morning session, staff from the Observatory will offer to walk any participants also attending the afternoon session the 1.3 miles to the afternoon's meeting point at the beach, spotting wildlife along the way.
Both sessions are free and parking at the Observatory will be free, however if you are attending the afternoon session at the Estate car park and are not walking there, you will need to pay for parking. You can pre-pay the £8 for car access to the estate and car park by following this link: https://www.sandwichbay.estate/admission-charges/
