Peoples of the world,

I am writing once again to invite you to take part in a unique and interactive experience. With support from the Arts Council of England, myself and friend and collaborator David Treece (translator and professor of Brazilian culture and literature at Kings College London), will be offering the second event in a series of workshops focusing on The São Paulo Tapes songs.

To see highlights of the first workshop, check this video

(By the way, we will be looking at different songs this time around.)

All these years I’ve been singing for you here in the UK I’ve had one regret: not being able to convey to you the beauty of the lyrics I sing.

And when I hear songs by non-Brazilian songwriters I love - such as Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Cole Porter, John Lennon, Gil Scott-Heron, Bob Dylan, Sting, Carole King, Paul McCartney, Nick Drake, Jacques Brel and so many others - I think how wonderful it would be if we could expand the pantheon of world class lyricists to include our Brazilian gods.

For now, you have to take my word for it. Our song poets have mastered a particular style for lyrics writing that will surprise you. A way of blending love, politics and social commentary in popular songs that will melt your heart.

But I'd like you to find out for yourself.

We will explore the meaning of the lyrics, the marriage of words and melodies, the different styles and their particular symbolisms... and the stories behind the songs.

Brazilian guitarist Ife Tolentino and myself will sing some of the songs during the workshops. And the discussions - with your contributions - will help us create poetry, lyrics and more resistance music.

Do join us.

The second workshop will take place on Sunday, September 24th, 2-5pm, at the Horniman Museum and Gardens, London. How to get there
