Description

Welcome to Liverpool! We have an exciting programme linking in with BAPS and BAPES.

We will start with a SAPS dinner on Tuesday 17th at the Artists Club, 5 Eberle St, Liverpool L2 2AG. This is a private members club, founded in 1877, and renowned for its friendliness and warm informality – like having a meal in some ones home rather than a posh restaurant. The unique feature of the Club is its collection of oil portraits of its Presidents of which Professor David Lloyd from Alder Hey was one. We would like to use the Grundy Bar and Halliday dining room but these are 6 stairs down from the lift with a robust handrail. If you are a wheelchair user and unable to do any stairs please let us know and we can change rooms. We would have the Club to ourselves meeting in the bar at 7 and then proceeding to eat at 7.30. Dinner would be a starter and main course (maybe a choice which would need to be pre ordered) and obviously a vegetarian option. Then cheese board, coffee and home made Eccles Cake all with good reasonably priced wine. The meal will cost around £30 and there will be a cost for wine, although BAPS is providing a contribution. It is walkable but you may like to meet up with other SAPS Members in your hotel and share a taxi. Nick and I are in Jury’s.

On Wed 18th we have a group booking for a combined Tour of the Beatles Story and Mersey Ferry River Explorer Cruise at £18.50. Starting at the Beatles Story at 9.15 south side of Albert Dock (near hotels - see map). The story of 4 young lads from Liverpool propelled to the dizzy heights of fame and fortune from their humble childhood beginnings. Complimentary Living History audio guide lasts about an hour. The tour can accommodate 3 wheelchair users. From there we would take a 20 min stroll across Albert Dock up to Pier Head. We board the Mersey Ferry at 10.50 for a 50 min River Explorer Cruise showing Liverpool’s iconic sights. On board we can have a drink and snack together.

BAPS has organised a special viewing of the Terracotta Warriors in the World Museum, William Brown street, from 07.30-09.30 on Wed 18th with Continental breakfast for £20 a head. Active early birds may feel able to go there and still get back to Beatles Story by 09.15. If you want to go to the Terracotta Warriors that morning and take things slowly you may like to skip the Beatles Story (or do it independently another day) and join us for the Mersey Ferry at £8.50 concession group rate. There are independent tickets still available for the Terracotta Warriors. Nick and I are going at 10.30 on Thurs 19th.

After the Mersey Ferry we would then walk back down to Albert Dock. There is the Tate North Museum free for general entry, but you would need to pay to see the Egon Sciele exhibition opening in May. There is a good self service restaurant for lunch: they will hold tables for up to 15 people at a specified time for 15 mins please let us know if you are interested. There is also the Maritime Museum with Titanic and Lusitania exhibitions. This is free with a genuine pub behind it for drink and food as required.

In the afternoon we have several options. We have been invited to join in the BAPS/BAPES Conference starting at 13.30 in the ACC building (see map and BAPS website for programme). We can join BAPS/BAPES Members for tea which is currently at 14.30. The fee is included in the evening reception see below. Alternatively a group of 10 can join David Lloyd and visit the Cavern Club where the Beatles played. (contact dalloyd@talktalk.net) Some of you may prefer longer at the Museums or a visit to the shopping Mall (Liverpool One) starting with John Lewis by the Hilton.

In the evening we will go by taxis from our hotels to the Anglican Cathedral (20 min up hill walk) Welcome/Presidential Reception of drinks and canapes £17.50 (half price) for spouses and Senior Members (free for Honorary Members). The Reception is from 7-9. Leave when you want and wander down hill back to Hotels stopping at one of Rick or Colette's recommended restaurants on the way if you wish.

Nick and I will leave on the Thursday lunch time after our visit to the Terracotta Warriors. Really hoping as many of you as possible will join us for this SAPS outing.

Looking forward to seeing you in Liverpool!

With Best Wishes
