About this Event

Sargy Mann (29 May 1937 – 5 April 2015) was a British figurative painter. He was known as a colourist and his work was driven by a desire to capture a sense of light and space.

Although deeply influenced by Cezanne and Bonnard his paintings were remarkably original. This exhibition, which has been developed working closely with the artist’s estate, is the largest public showing of Mann’s work to date. It includes work from the very different periods of his practise which spans more than four decades. The exhibition includes an extensive collection of paintings and drawings, alongside never before shown archival material, photographs and audio recordings.

Sargy Mann was a painting student at Camberwell Art School (now Camberwell College of Arts) where he later became a teacher. Mann exhibited regularly in group shows in the 1970’s and by the end of his career he had had over twenty solo exhibitions. Notable recent shows include Euan Uglow / Sargy Mann (the Usher Collection, Lincoln, 2016-17) and Sargy Mann, Late Paintings curated by Chantal Joffe (Royal Drawing School, London 2019).

This is a free event but booking is recommended. Free parking available in the Maurice Shock Building car park next door on Lancaster Road. All welcome!

Advance booking entitles you to a free glass of something cool on arrival.
