About this event

SASH is pleased to announce the relaunch of our “Parents Drop-In” service, which is now open all parents and carers of people with learning disabilities and autism living in London. This group aims to support and empower people to successfully address issues around sexual health, sexualised behaviour, and sex and relationships affecting the people they support.

Some of the clients we support present with needs to address such as masturbating in public, inappropriate touching, understanding their body, online safety, risk of exploitation, difficulties in navigating dating and relationships, safer sex, reproductive health and other sex matters.

These topics can be specifically harder to navigate, address, and understand for those living with autism, as well as those living with learning disabilities that can affect things such as learning social norms, communication, and understanding the difference between appropriate and inappropriate, to name a few.

If you are a parent or carer struggling to address behaviours related to the above topics, please do book yourself in to attend our new group. There you will have the opportunity to ask questions, meet other parents who face the same difficulties, and support one another.

    When

The drop in will start on the 13th of May 2024 at 5pm and will be around 60 minutes long, weekly (excluding Bank Holiday Monday, on May 27th 2024), for 6 weeks. Please read the FAQs for more information about this.

    Where

The drop in will be online. You can book your space here, and then you will receive a meeting link in your Confirmation Email.

    Who can attend

Parents and carers of individuals who have a learning disability and autism, who are residents of any London borough. Please read the FAQs for more information on this.

    Is there any age restriction?

No, however SASH only supports clients 14 and above.

To learn more about this, please read the FAQs.

What to expect when attending the parents drop in?

The group will take place every Monday (excluding Bank Holidays) for 6 weeks.

The first session will be an introductory session to get to know the facilitator/s, SASH services, other parents attending, and to decide together what topics to discuss going forward, based on the difficulties that parents are presenting with.

There will be also the opportunity to ask questions and share what issues parents are facing.

There is the expectation to maintain confidentiality regarding what has been discussed during the sessions, and this will be addressed at the beginning of each session as ground rule for participation.

If you feel that sharing your experience can support other parents, feel free to share otherwise, If you are not willing to share, you are more than welcome to still attend and listen.

    Frequently asked questions

Can the person I look after attend the group?

No, this group is only open to parents and carers of someone living with learning disabilities or autism. However, if the person you are caring for needs SASH support, and lives in Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, or Hammersmith & Fulham, then please do contact us and we can refer them in.

Is the service free of charge?

Yes, SASH provides a free, non judgemental and confidential service.

The person I look after is also receiving support from SASH. Will information be shared?

The information shared during the group sessions will not be shared with the person you support, likewise, due to confidentiality, SASH will not be able to share any information regarding the person you support.

Can I access the group even though the person I support has never accessed SASH?

Yes you can, our Parents' and Carers' group is available to anyone in London who supports someone with a learning disability or Autism. However, we can only offer the full range of SASH services to those who reside in Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, or Westminster.

Can another family member/carer attend the group with me?

Yes, they can, as long as they are involved in the care of the person you look after. In this case, we would kindly ask you to book a ticket for each person attending.

Will the group be extended past the 6 weekly sessions?

Yes, the group will resume with another 6 sessions after a brief pause. However, participants are not guaranteed to have access to multiple sets of 6 sessions. We will review this with you on an individual basis and make the decision we see as best suited to your needs at that time.

I do not live in the H&F/WCC/RBKC Borough, can I still attend?

Yes you can. The group is now open to all parents/carers in London. However, due to funding, we are not able to offer to you or the person you look after further support beside this drop in. We aim to support you finding the appropriate service to your needs, locally to you.
