Discover the world of traditional Japanese mending embroidery and learn Boro mending and Sashiko stitching in this creative and mindful workshop led by Karen Giroud (cushy_butterfield@instagram.com)

Breathe new life into your old or damaged clothes and pick up new hand sewing skills with this fun textile art class. This form of decorative reinforcement repairs tears and makes clothes stronger, warmer and more visually striking. It is a great way to avoid textile waste.

You will learn about the fascinating history behind Sashiko while creating your own designs. Your teacher will provide a range of stencil templates and plenty of inspiration and tips. This is a great activity for avoiding textile waste and is a fun, creative and meditative way to spend a couple of hours. You will leave the workshop excited to apply your new skills.

All materials provided and you are welcome to bring your own clothes to work on too.

Frequently asked questions

Is the workshop suitable for beginners?

Yes - it is suitable for novice sewers as well as people who have more experience of hand stitching. There are lots of design options that you can tailor to your skillset and confidence.

Can I bring my own clothes to mend?

Yes please do! You can bring any woven (non-knitted) clothing to work on but this is not required and you can work on a sampler with the materials provided.

What if I don't finish in time?

I will give you the materials needed to complete your design at home.

Is it easy to park?

Parking is free but can be tricky at Windsor Place. There is a free carpark at Bridge Street in Portobello or on street at the Joppa end of Portobello.

What can I learn?

You will learn: How to use sashiko stencils, how to grid out designs on fabric, how to Sashiko stitch and secure your thread to make a durable mend. How to do boro patching.
