Event description
Save Our Rivers hosts a discussion about Natural Flood Management - the Dam Alternative

About this Event

What are the benefits of Natural Flood Management over traditional engineered schemes? A hot topic in river and upland conservation at the moment; supporters of Natural Flood Management believe it saves money and brings ecological and landscape improvements to upland areas alongside massive benefits to carbon sequestration.

Hear from Dan Turner who will discuss Natural Flood Management vs traditional engineered options, while James Anderson will bring awareness to the Environment Agency's Phase 3 Flood Defence Plans for the river Kent and Kendal and facilitate a Q&A.

Dan Turner from The Rivers Trust:

Dan Turner, rock climbing athlete come Natural Flood Management expert. When Dan’s not searching for the next hard bouldering project, he can be found working hard for the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust. He works with communities, farmers and landowners delivering several projects across the Yorkshire region to help reduce flooding, improve river quality and build resilience with local communities.

James Anderson

One time ski bum turned fly fisherman local resident James is an environmental professional and seasoned environmental campaigner. He is active in legal work to prevent river pollution and the import of declining protected species.

* Phase 3. The Environment Agency plan to build a 160m long dam across the River Kent upstream of Kendal with a control gate to create an area of impounded water during high flows. Although for flood defence and not for electricity this dam will have many of the same environmental consequences as a traditional hydro power dam, damaging river ecology and causing associated damage to a pretty special upland area.

This event is free but please book a ticket for seating.
