Saxophonist Art Themen

Art was a long time partner of the great Stan Tracey, and started his career in the blues boom of the early 60s, with the likes of Jack Bruce and Alexis Korner.

During this period he also worked with Phil Seamen, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and Long John Baldry. In the late 60s and early 70s his musical direction shifted towards jazz and he played with Barbara Thompson, Michael Garrick, Henry Lowther and Graham Collier. In 1974 he began a long and particularly fruitful association with Tracey, which continued into the 90s.

Art toured the world fronting Stan Tracey's quartet for 20 years and has been featured with virtually everyone on the UK jazz scene. In addition, he has played alongside American legends including Philly Joe Jones, George Coleman, Red Rodney, Nat Adderley, Arturo Sandoval, Scott Hamilton...the list goes on and on!. Outside the jazz scene, he has accompanied such diverse artists as Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Chuck Berry, and even Bing Crosby!

with Gareth Williams: keys • Flo Moore: bass • Rick Finlay: drums • Jeremy Shoham: sax

Frequently asked questions

Where will I be seated?

FAQs The Elephant is a small local pub. We have very limited seating capacity, so we seat our audience in order of booking. So the sooner you book, the more likely you are to be able to choose your location (which you can do when you make your online booking).

Can I be seated with friends?

If you have friends who have booked separately and you'd like to sit together, just drop us a note at info@justeastofjazz.com and we will make that happen.

How does the food thing work?

Your seats are reserved, check out our mouthwatering menus, and staff will take your order at your table. Munch during the gig, which is absolutely fine…or get there early and eat before the music starts at 7. Given that a lot of people order at the same time food can take 20-30 mins to arrive.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

There is on-street parking in the roads round the pub. West Finchley underground station (Northern Line) is a short walk away.

Can I pay on the night?

Yes, for those who haven't pre-booked there is a collection at the interval. We charge a minimum £11 on the night but we can't guarantee that you'll get in or that there will be seating. So generally it's better to book – and when you do that you help us keep the club running.

Are there any concessions?

If you join our mailing list you'll be sent a secret promo code which gives you discount for most gigs. There is a lower ticket price for students in full-time education. Students & unwaged can also turn up on the night and pay whatever you like…

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Don’t hesitate to leave a message for Rick at Just East of Jazz on 07831 376175 for questions about the gig. For queries about the pub — food, drink, access and so on, call the pub on 020 8343 6110.
