Event description

Description

SCAN is joining up with the festival and artist group show PALM to host a conversation, which will look again at the art ecology in Aberdeenshire. The event brings emerging artists based in the region together with different cultural producers to ask what support structures should be in place as we face increasingly precarious futures. This question is interesting in relation to themes that arise in important social and environmental art practices and particularly in this context, where a number of artists and curators have been exploring the question metaphorically through, for example, a consideration of soil as a fundamental and undervalued support, or oil as the lubricant that sustains our current arts programming.

Working, as a call and response the gathering will balance short presentations with discussion to foster open dialogue between different actors in the city and shire and create a shared vision of a future in Aberdeenshire in light of the current political climate. In relation to the question, what supports you speakers joining from different institutions will also be asked to think about the reverse of this question – what do you support bringing forward and making accessible latent metaphors or narratives (permaculture, look again, eco-feminism, community etc.) that motivate programming. In this way SCAN will offer a platform for artists to meet changing organisations and vice versa. It will be a moment to consider the particular socio-economic/ environmental challenges we face and offer a collective response.

Guest Speakers include Lorraine Grant (Woodend Barn), Rachel Grant (Freelance artist and curator), Tamsin Greenlaw (Suttie Arts space NHS Grampian), Hilary Nicol (Look Again Visual Art & Design Festival), Nuno Sacramento (Peacock visual Arts), Tako Taal (Artist), Sam Trotman (SSW).
