Event description
“Communities need a scapegoat – it’s always been that way” states an exhibition by the Swiss National Museum.

About this Event

Whether in prehistoric times, in the Middle Ages or today, society needs a scapegoat. By channelling its aggression on to a single victim, a community strengthens its cohesion. Even today, individual people are still held responsible on the general behalf for societal problems.

Following an introduction to the ‘Scapegoat – Bouc émissaire’ exhibition by the Swiss National Museum, speakers from Berlin, Geneva and Zürich will share their reactions to the sometimes-shocking stories of collective violence against individuals in Europe throughout the ages. They will also explore what can be done individually and collectively to oppose the resuming scapegoat mechanism in present days.

The panel discussion will be followed by an apéro drink and the possibility for a short-guided tour of the ‘Scapegoat’ exhibition.

Please note that your registration information will also be shared with the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform (the key Facilitator Geneva Peace Week) for the purpose of compiling anonymous statistics on event attendance.

This event is part of the Geneva Peace Week 2019 (https://www.genevapeaceweek.ch/), a collective initiative of the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform in collaboration with the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), and the Platform’s five partners – the Graduate Institute’s Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding (CCDP); the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF); the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP); Interpeace; and the Quaker United Nations Office, Geneva (QUNO). Geneva Peace Week is also supported by the government of Switzerland. It includes meetings and events on different topics related to the promotion of peace.
