Event description

Description

Open to all researchers (PhD/ masters/ readers/ staff) from Edinburgh College of Art and the School of Physics & Astronomy). Undergraduates welcome to Tues 18th Feb opening seminar.

SCART Connection is an exciting and stimulating opportunity to examine notions of truth, rigour and originality with your own and others' work, bringing together researchers and postgraduate researchers from The School of Physics & Astronomy and Edinburgh College of Art.

The launch seminar and workshop on Tuesday 18th February in Summerhall presents six diverse speakers each for ten minutes: followed by an hour of workshop.

Speakers include: on Truth - Dr Paolo Beltrame (Dark Matter) and Dr Sophia Lycouris (Performance & Choreography); on 'Rigour' - Piotr Leśniak PhD Candidate (Architecture by-Design) and Dr Wahid Bhimji (Particle Physics including work on the Higgs boson experimental discovery); and on 'Originality' - Prof Chris Speed (Design Informatics) and Prof Andy Lawrence (Astronomy).

Within the workshop is an opportunity for attendees to form flash research inquiry collaborations. The following days are when you'll visit each other's research environment, inquire further into each other's methods and concerns, and independently form findings into group presentations.

Collaborators all meet again in the InSpace facility (Potterrow/ Crichton St) on the morning of Friday 21st February where you co-present those findings and propose how you would present them to a lay audience at the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

On Tuesday 8th April at 8pm in Summerhall, you will then copresent your findings in a lively and engaging way to an audience at our special event at The Edinburgh International Science Festival -introduced by Professor Chris Breward, Vice Principal of Creative Industries & Performing Arts.

This is an excellent opportunity to examine and challenge the tenets of research and inquiry through your own work; to review your own work through those tenets; and to see your own work viewed afresh from new perspectives.
