About this event

Arts • Comedy

In 1816, the eruption of Mount Tambora led to the "Year Without a Summer". No sunshine, no warmth, no harvest. Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley were visiting Lord Byron by Lake Geneva and were dead bored. Stuck inside in the gloom, Byron had the idea to have a ghost story writing competition. Mary Shelley (18) was initially stressed, but soon wrote Frankenstein.

In 2025, a small number of writers and comedians (see line-up) will gather in the gorgeous red velvet basement of Aces and Eights on "the Wednesday of Halloween" to rapidly write and read some spooky and funny tales by torchlight, trying their hardest not to pull a Mary Shelley and accidentally write a hugely influential work of gothic literature.
