The SCCJR are excited to announce the rescheduled date for our first in-person Knowledge Exchange training session for PGRs and ECRs: Exploring zine-making as a creative participatory approach to research and knowledge exchange.

This workshop will take place on Monday 30th May from 9am-1.30pm at the University of Glasgow, Saint Andrews Building, Room 224.

What will the workshop involved?

Zines are small DIY booklets or magazines and making them requires no creative or specialist skills - just about anyone can make a zine. This workshop will introduce zine-making as creative and participatory research method. Drawing on Mindy and Lisa's work facilitating zine-making, together we will explore the power of zines in research and knowledge exchange. Through participating in the workshop, you will gain hands-on experience of zine making as method, introducing zines as media for agency and resistance and as canvasses for self-expression through and beyond words.

This session will be facilitated by Dr Lisa Bradley and Mindy Ptolomey, University of Glasgow.

Biographies:

Lisa Bradley is an anti-disciplinary scholar and methodologist who uses theory and method as tools to prise apart dominant knowledge practices towards realities unseen, and alternative modes of thinking and doing. She is experienced in developing a wide range of transformative methodological approaches, including community-led and arts-based methodologies. She is just as at home (re)imagining the world through craft and making – her PhD thesis was accompanied by a hand-embroidered, patchwork quilt. She is currently based in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow as Lecturer in Creative and Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and leads the MSc Education for Sustainable Futures, and a number of research projects, including: Kitchen Life, Diversifying Justice, and Researchers Don’t Cry?!

Amanda (Mindy) Ptolomey is based across Sociology and Education at the University of Glasgow and focuses on developing creative inquiry to research with marginalised people. Mindy’s doctoral research explores everyday life through zine-making workshops with disabled girls and young women, and Mindy has facilitated zine-making with children and adults in a range of settings. Mindy is also Co-PI on the projects Researcher's Don't Cry?!, and Exploring Picturebooks in Online Spaces. Alongside academic research Mindy has worked in community development and peacebuilding education for over a decade and facilitates creative events including workshops and film screenings.
