School Computing Self Review Tool Workshop

Tuesday Jan 10, 2017 from 10:00AM to 3:00PM

Hosted by CAS London (King's College London/Queen Mary University of London)

An introduction to the new CAS School Self Review Tool.(SR tool). This is a working group meeting, where we will review the tool to improve progression and cohesion across the sections and bands.

The self-assessment tool will give schools guidance as to their position in relation to the teaching of computing. It is intended to be used as a guide to inform further development to (a) support teaching staff in their transition from ICT to computing, and (b) enable computing to be embedded in the school as part of a broad and balanced curriculum.

Introduction

CAS is in the process of creating a school self assessment tool for computing that will enable schools to assess where they are in terms of implementing the computing curriculum and will then provide suggestions for how to move forward and where they could access support. At the moment the tool is in the form of a Word document but ultimately, it is hoped to turn this into an online interactive development tool for computing that can be used for both primary and secondary schools.

Areas that are considered important in the delivery of the computing curriculum will be highlighted with 5 statements that act as a ‘best fit’ for schools. The statements will align themselves to these areas:

  • Level 5 there is little or nothing in place
  • Level 4 – Policy and practice is being developed (Awareness)
  • Level 3 – Policy and practice is in place (Adoption)
  • Level 2 – Policy and practice is coherent and embedded (Implementation)
  • Level 1 – Policy and practice is aspirational and innovative (Impact)

By attending this workshop we invite you to contribute to the development of the tool so that we can ensure that it is as relevant as possible within many different contexts. So, we will be looking at the following:

  • statements attached to the different levels (i.e. are they fit for purpose)
  • does the tool fit both the primary and secondary school contexts?
  • Do you have suggestions for resources that would enable schools to transition from one level to another?
  • Should the computing education element have separate aspects for CS, DL and IT?

This is an important development for CAS and we are keen to ensure that both primary and secondary members are involved in it's development. However, places on this workshop are limited and so please book yours as soon as possible.
