About this event

Arts • Fine Art

The School of Art Monday Lectures is a public series of talks by leading national and international artists and thinkers. The School of Art’s practice-led research embodies and critically reflects upon new registers of contemporary art, whilst rearticulating processes and practices associated with established artistic media.

Mai Nguyễn-Long is an artist and researcher who has learnt to work through her own fragmented heritage: a visceral journey that led to the creation of Vomit Girl – a celebrated series of ceramic works born from the trauma-informed complexities that had silenced her roots.

This talk is about her journey to find the right words and visual language to negotiate issues of intergenerational trauma, unspeakable secrets, folkloric practices and the role of art in reimagining victim-perpetrator dynamics. It looks at the importance of artefacts in preserving modes of spiritual and cultural being and how specific mediums can unlock other ways of understanding ideas that can be locked deep within a person or place – an artist’s personal healing and professional account of the development of a significant body of work.
