School of Law Roundtable Seminar: Wildlife Law Reform and the Future Protection of Wildlife.

Friday 30 May, 12:00 to 16:30 The Barn, Middlesex University Hendon Campus.

Speakers:

Dr Keith Vincent, former lead lawyer on the Law Commission’s wildlife reform project
Mr Mark Jones, Humane Society International
Ms Melanie Wellsmith, University of Huddersfield
Dr Haydn Davies, Birmingham City University, United Kingdom Environmental Law Association Council Member

Chair: Dr. Angus Nurse, Middlesex University.

This roundtable discussion focuses on wildlife law and wildlife crime in the UK. It discusses the Law Commission’s current proposals for reform of UK wildlife law which advocate the wider use of civil sanctions and a full range of regulatory options to address wildlife crime problems and achieve better integration of EU law into the UK’s wildlife law regime.  The roundtable provides an opportunity to discuss issues relating to improving wildlife law and use of law to address wildlife crime, leading up to and beyond the 2015 general election in which the protection of wildlife and animal law are likely to be a hotly contested. Our speakers combine academic and NGO experts in wildlife law, wildlife crime and wildlife protection and include Dr Keith Vincent (former Law Commission lead on wildlife law reform).

Your Chair is Dr Angus Nurse, author of Animal Harm: Perspectives on Why People Harm and Kill Animals and co-ordinator of green criminological research at Middlesex University.

The event commences at 12pm with a buffet lunch and opportunity for networking with presentations and discussion commencing at 1pm.  Afternoon refreshments will be provided.

Advance questions for panel discussion can be submitted via email to the Roundtable’s Chair: Dr Angus Nurse at – a.nurse@mdx.ac.uk
