Description

Can children contribute to decisions that affect their lives? A sharing of the experience of using Action Research approaches with children, parents/ guardians and community leaders in two communities in Uganda.

Hilda Nankunda, PhD Student, School of Social Work, University of Central Lancashire

This seminar presentation will be a sharing of the field work experience with children, parents/guardians, and community leaders, using Action Research approaches, in July to November 2013 in Uganda. It is part of a PhD qualitative study that is exploring ways of using Independent Human Rights Institutions for Children (IHRIC) in Africa to increase awareness of Children’s Rights among children, thus making them participant in promoting and realising their rights through existing structures. Action Research approaches were employed in two Ugandan districts; informal urban and deep rural communities, involving 72 participants. This presentation will cover preparation and entry into the communities, administrative issues and the procedures that were followed with different groups during data collection using different methods and tools. This field research benefited from a £1000 grant from the British Academy in East Africa, 2013.

Nankunda Hilda Kalekyezi: A beneficiary of the UCLan partial PhD scholarship for International Students. Her project title is: The role of Human Rights Institutions for Children in Africa in raising awareness about children’s rights among children.

Seminar is free Refreshments provided.
