Event Details

The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee is meeting in Liverpool to hear oral evidence in connection with its inquiry into the balance and effectiveness of research and innovation funding.

Come and watch the Committee take evidence from representatives of the university sector from across the country, as MPs pursue their inquiry and begin to develop recommendations for the Government.

The big issue

The Government has committed to increasing the amount of money spent on research and development in the UK from around 1.7% of GDP currently to 2.4% by 2027. Meanwhile, the creation of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) last year has brought together the major parts of the UK funding system for research and innovationThere is now an opportunity to take a fresh look at how funding for research and innovation is allocated, and to explore whether systems are as effective as they can be.

In this session, the Committee wants to explore what the balance of funding should be, including between different disciplines, between different parts of the UK, and between project-based research council funding and ‘block’ funding.
