Scotland House London, in partnership with Tideway and Nesta, invites you to a roof terrace reception to celebrate the opening of Scottish artist Nathan Coley’s permanent installation Stages in Blackfriars’ new public space, the Bazalgette Embankment.

Nathan is a Glasgow-based artist interested in the idea of ‘public’ space. His practice explores the ways in which architecture becomes invested, and reinvested, with meaning. Across a range of media, he investigates what the built environment reveals about the people it surrounds and how the social and individual response to it is in turn culturally conditioned. Nathan graduated from Glasgow School of Art and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2007. His work has been shown extensively across the world, and is represented in countless international public and private collections.

Earlier this year, after 10 years of construction, Tideway announced the successful activation of their new 25km super sewer, designed to prevent millions of tonnes of sewage being discharged into the Thames each year, and ushering in a healthier future for London’s iconic river. The new Bazalgette Embankment is a flagship location for Tideway’s project, creating three acres of new public realm along the route of the River Thames at seven different locations, and connecting the capital’s residents and visitors with the river. Tideway has commissioned more than 50 pieces of public artwork to serve as a prominent above-ground visual legacy of their work.
