AUTUMN TECHNICAL CPD DAY - LDC SCOTLAND

Speakers:- Nick Smith, Peter Harrison, Peter Diamond & Jeff Lewis.

Nick smith – “Glare with LED, what are my options”

Summary

Glare with LED is becoming a big problem with manufacturers chasing wider spacings. The paper covers a summary of the options of considering glare now with LED but this could cover any light source. There are five or six options discussed which can be calculated with a brief look at how these can be calculated in Lighting Reality and a summary of the current research.

Peter Harrison –  GN22

Summary

Institution of Lighting Professionals Guidance Note 22, Asset-Management Toolkit: Minor Structures (AToMS) is an important document for everyone who has a responsibility to manage highway assets in line with the UK Roads Liaison Group Well-managed highway infrastructure Code of Practice.

This covers everyone who is responsible for lamp posts, traffic posts, traffic signal poles, signs, CCTV, WiFi, floral decorations or similar. This will include:

When the Code of Practice was introduced it required changes in how highway authorities manage their highway assets. The focus is now asset condition assessment based and this prompted a step change in how lighting columns are assessed. The Institution of Lighting Professionals, working with the UK Lighting Board of the UK Roads Liaison Group, Highway Electrical Association and Transport for London have published GN 22, Asset-Management Toolkit: Minor Structures to help everyone who has a responsibility for such assets to effectively manage them in line with the CoP going forward.

Peter Diamond –  56* of Solar

Summary

The challenge is how do we as a profession assess its suitability and calls for solar lighting system standards to be implemented for the UK.

The requirement for solar Installations may increase, as though night time load on the grid has been reduced significantly by LED Implementation and part night switch off or dimming the load on the grid at night may well increase very significantly as we choose or are forced to drive electric vehicles!

Jeff Lewis - Wiring Regulations and Street Lighting

Summary

The paper will focus on the changes to the IET Wiring Regulations and how these changes, following their implementation,  have affected street lighting. There will also be a review of terminology changes in the new regulations.
