Description

Scotland's Oral Health Plan - Stirling Roadshow

Introduction

On the 15th September 2016, the Scottish Government launched a consultation exercise, Scotland’s Oral Health Plan.

Following the previous Dental Action Plan in 2005, substantial progress has been made in oral health and access to NHS dental services. This consultation document focuses on important issues we have to address in the future. The document covers the strategy to further improve the health of the Scottish population as well as how dental services might be provided.

Roadshow Events

Central to the consultation is ensuring that dental professionals are informed about the drivers for change and the strategic priorities. Therefore, the Scottish Government is hosting a series of roadshow events across Scotland that will be of particular interest to dentists and DCPs working in the primary care sector. Attendance at a roadshow will provide an opportunity to learn about the consultation document, participate in discussion and help influence the final way forward for NHS dental services in Scotland.

As places at the event are limited, advance registration is essential and we ask that people only register to attend one event. Each person who wishes to attend must register individually as group bookings are not possible. If you wish to attend but the event is fully booked you can register for the waitlist and you will be notified via email if a place becomes available. Attendance at this event will attract 2 hours verifiable CPD but is not eligible for CPD Allowance.

Event Timings

The format of the roadshow event will be as follows:

18:15 – 19:00            Registration and Hospitality

19:00 – 19:15            Introduction from the Chief Dental Officer

19:15 – 20:00           Breakout Session 1

20:00 – 20:45          Breakout Session 2

20:45 – 21:00           Closing remarks from the Chief Dental Officer

Breakout Sessions

In order to provide everyone with the opportunity to share their views there will be a number of breakout sessions. These groups will have facilitated discussions based on themes within the consultation document. The four thematic topics are as follows:

Prevention and Risk

This theme will discuss proposals for:

  • a more prevention based approach for children and adults (from the age of 18) who are in good, stable oral health;
  • the introduction of Oral Health Risk Assessments beginning with young adults at 18 years of age.

Payments and Charges

This theme will discuss proposals for:

  • how payments can be simplified and aligned to desirable outcomes for a new preventive care pathway;
  • individual GDP allowances and practice allowances, including NHS commitment;
  • a range of enhanced service, including for domiciliary care;
  • patient charges.

Organisation and Management

This theme will discuss proposals for:

  • governance arrangements with independent contractors;
  • professional leadership within NHS Boards;
  • locality planning of NHS dental services.

Quality Improvement and Scrutiny

This theme will discuss proposals for:

  • changes to clinical quality monitoring for a preventive pathway;
  • workforce change.

Each attendee will participate in two 45 minute breakout sessions which will allow them to discuss 2 out of the 4 themes. Attendees will be asked to indicate their preferred discussion topics when registering for the event. However, we are unable to guarantee that everyone will be able to attend their choice of breakout sessions.

We also recognise that attendees may wish to participate in all four discussions. As this is not possible at the actual roadshow events, attendees are encouraged to complete the consultation questionnaire which provides an opportunity to input views on all of the issues which will be discussed at the roadshows.
