ScotlandsFest 2016: What is it to be European with Richard Demarco and Alyn Smith MEP
Richard Demarco has energised Scottish Arts over the last 50 years; his creative friendship with Joseph Beuys is marked by Festival exhibitions at the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh College and Summerhall. Alyn Smith MEP has represented Scotland at the European Parliament for 12 years. Both are passionate Europeans who believe that art crosses all borders.
RICHARD DEMARCO was born in Edinburgh in 1930. He is an artist and patron of the visual and performing arts. He has been one of Scotland’s most influential advocates for contemporary art through his work at the Richard Demarco Gallery and the Demarco European Art Foundation. He has attended every Edinburgh Festival since its inception in 1947, and he was a cofounder of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh in 1963. He is Professor Emeritus of European Cultural Studies at Kingston University, London. Demarco's latest book, Richard Demarco & Joseph Beuys: A unique partnership, is available here.
JOSEPH BEUYS was a German sculptor and creator of actionperformances, political activist and teacher.
ALYN SMITH MEP was born in Glasgow in 1973, Alyn grew up in Scotland and Saudi Arabia, returning to Scotland in 1986. After living in London, in 2000 Alyn moved back to Scotland working first for a legal firm in Edinburgh and from 2002 for Richard Lochhead MSP then the SNP Group at Holyrood as an adviser on European, Justice and Business policies. Alyn was elected to the European Parliament for the first time in 2004 and has been re-elected twice in the SNP victories in the 2009 and 2014 elections. He is Honorary President of the Young Scots for Independence as well as a member of the SNP's National Executive Committee. In Parliament, he is a full member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a substitute member of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. He is a full member of both the Delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula, and the Delegation for relations with Iraq. Alyn is a Director of LGBT Youth Scotland, a charity in Scotland campaigning against homophobia. The post is voluntary and unpaid. He is also the Honorary Vice President of the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Scotland's animal welfare charity. The post is voluntary and unpaid. Alyn and his boyfriend Jonathon live in Edinburgh.
