Event description
Scott Logic are running an AI Coding Challenge in association with University of Bristol, 'the battle of the bots'.

About this Event

You're invited to join us and use your Java or Python development skills to create a bot to face off against your enemy!

What's going to happen:

Scott Logic will be hosting an AI coding challenge at University of Bristol within the Ivy Gate Building. The AI coding challenge has been designed by Scott Logic to help students with an interest in software development and to use their coding skills in a fun challenge.

The event is open to all University of Bristol students. You don't need to be a Computer Science student to take part, however, you will need to have a reasonable working knowledge of Java or Python and there will be some Scott Logic developers there to help you out. Do feel free to come in a team (ideally 3 people) but this isn't essential because we can group people together into teams on the day.

There will be prizes for the best teams, plenty of sweets (of course!) and free pizza to keep your energy levels high.

What will I be doing?

The code challenge is a turn-based game for AI bots written in Java or Python. At the start of each turn your bot will be provided with the current game state, e.g. map size, your team details and visible food items. Your task is to provide the next move for each of your players so that they can collect food, defend the home base or attack enemy locations. You’ll have some utility routines at your disposal, e.g. distance between two locations, a basic routing algorithm, but it’s up to you how you balance the activities of your players to maximise your chances of winning.

Once you’ve designed and written your bot you’ll be able to upload it to the game server and pit it against a series of test bots to hone your skills. The final challenge will be a battle against bots developed by your rival teams.

What will the format for the afternoon look like?

1:00pm 1:30pm - Welcome, Setup, and Introduction to the AI Challenge

1:45pm - coding challenge starts

3:00pm to 3.30pm - Refreshment / pizza break

5:00pm - End of coding

5.15pm to 6:00pm - Announce the winning team and present prize

6:00pm to 7:30pm - Head to The WG Grace (Whiteladies Rd) for drinks on Scott Logic.

What should I bring?

Quite simply all you need to bring is brain power, a fighting spirit and a laptop with chrome that can connect to the internet!! Don't forget your laptop charger!!

Please note you will need to register in advance of the event if you wish to attend as we can only host a maximum of 60 students.
