Event description
A race against the clock to find and document bugs in code!

About this Event

Description

Scott Logic in conjunction with DUCS will be hosting a Bugathon on campus from 1pm on Wednesday 30th October in the Queen Mother Building (Computing Lab) to help students with an interest in software development or testing to better understand what’s involved when testing software.

The Bugathon is a fun event where you'll be work as part of a team to find and document bugs in code. Testing is an exciting and creative career option, but it’s not as well-known as other elements of software development which is something that we would like to change.

There will be prizes for the best teams, and free pizza to keep your energy levels high. Perhaps more importantly, there will also be several Scott Logic testers and developers taking part. They're all very friendly, so feel free to chat with them about what it's like to do their job and get tips from them to help you start your career in software testing.

What will I be doing?

You'll need to work quickly to decide what your test approach is going to be, how to prioritise and gain test coverage of the features, and whether to spend time looking for a few high impact, difficult to find bugs, or log more of the more straightforward ones. You’ll need to think about how much time and effort to spend describing the bug in a report, bearing in mind that it needs to be easy for someone else to understand, recreate and resolve.

Teams are awarded points for finding bugs and the quality of their bug reports, while points will be deducted for logging duplicates! Teams can see how well they are doing in relation to other teams on a leaderboard. We'll be looking to see how different teams react to the changing state of the board. We’re also eager to hear from each team about how they approached the task, what information or experiences informed this, and how they adapted their approach as they learned more about the application. Individual inventiveness should never be underestimated, so we expect to see each team come up with something quite different.

What will the format for the afternoon look like?

1.00pm - Set up and Introduction to the Bugathon

1.30pm - Bug Hunt - Session 1

2.30pm - Break, refreshments & pizza. Catch up on experience so far

3.00pm - Bug Hunt - Session 2

3.45pm - Debrief and awarding of prizes

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself really! Feel free to bring along your own laptop but the computers in the lab will of course be available. And don’t worry if you’re coming alone, we’ll be helping to put people into teams on the day.
