Event description

"Great event, loved it!"
“Very inspiring, fired up my enthusiasm

Delegates from Scottish Council 2019.

Join us at the Marine Hotel in North Berwick for an exciting and interesting weekend of walks, talks, workshops, elections, discussion and socialising with Ramblers members from across Scotland.

Scottish Council is our annual opportunity for members to debate, discuss and formally review our work, hear about inspiring new initiatives, meet fellow Ramblers from our 54 groups and stand for election to get involved in the running of the organisation.

Scottish Council offers plenty to enjoy, highlights will include:

  • An illustrated talk by Quintin Lake, an outstanding architectural and landscape photographer. Quintin walks for weeks at a time and he loves the serenity of the wild landscapes he encounters on foot. In 2015 he embarked on a 10,000km walk around the British coast in sections. By October 2019, he had completed 81% of the route - and he's been particularly impressed by Scotland's access rights.

  • Inspiring updates on Ramblers Scotland’s work and GB developments over the last year with presentations from Sarah Marfleet, director of membership and fundraising and Brendan Paddy, director of Ramblers Scotland.

  • Celebrating group successes and hearing from the winner of the 2019 Scottish Council Challenge about their exciting projects and achievements.

  • Lively discussion and debate on an array of interesting topics and motions. The opportunity to enjoy a dinner and social time with fellow members from across Scotland.

  • Stunning surroundings, lovely walks, fun activities and use of the hotel pool and leisure facilities!

All members are welcome to attend. Only people representing their area, group, or affiliated organisation along with honorary officers, members of SCEC and motions committee will be able to vote at the conference. We urge every area and group to send delegates.

If you are passionate about the outdoors and have ideas about how we can get more people walking in Scotland, please consider standing for election to the Scottish council executive committee or motions committee. Any Ramblers Scotland member, who has been a member since 7 March 2019 or earlier, is eligible to stand. Further details here.

  • Each group can send one voting delegate.

  • Each area can send two voting delegates.

  • Honorary officers and members of SCEC and the motions committee, as well as 3 members of the board of trustees can attend.

  • Affiliated organisations can send one voting delegate.

Comment from recent Scottish Councils has suggested that formal motions are not the only way of bringing forward matters for discussion. While motions are necessary to deal with matters such as changes to the constitution, in many cases the constraints of a formal motion may stand in the way of free ranging discussion of issues of importance. If you, your group or your area have a topic for discussion at Scottish Council which you think is important and relevant to the organisation as a whole, please email your suggestion to by 31st January.

If you'd like to submit a formal Motion for debate, it must be submitted by Mon 3 Feb. Find out more here

There is no cost to attend Scottish Council during the day, however there are accommodation costs if staying overnight, outlined below.

If you are the official representative from your area, group, affiliated group or are an honorary officer, member of SCEC, the motions committee or board of trustees, then the accommodation is free if you are prepared to share a room with another official representative.

If you'd like a room on your own, there is a single room supplement of £45 – this applies to all official delegates.

Non voting members and guests must cover their own transport and overnight costs. These can be paid for by yourself or out of your area or group funds, if agreed beforehand with either your group or area.

If you are paying your own accommodation, the subsidised cost is £55 each for a shared room and £100 for a single room. (This includes dinner, bed and breakfast)

Please note there is a fixed and limited number of rooms, priority will be given to those travelling a distance to attend.

Payment for accommodation should be sent to Ramblers Scotland no later than Friday 7 February 2020. Please either:

  • send a cheques, made payable to Ramblers' Association Scotland, to Jeannie Cranfield, Ramblers Scotland, Caledonia House, 1 Redheughs Rigg, South Gyle, Edinburgh. EH12 9DQ

  • or send bank transfer to Unity Trust Bank, Sort Code: 60-83-01, Bank Account: 20124380. Please use your surname and the reference SC20 with this transfer.

Whilst we cover travel and accommodation for each official area and group delegate who attends, it is expected that, where possible, official delegates will share transport to minimise costs to Ramblers Scotland.

We do not pay expenses for other members, representatives from affiliated groups or additional persons attending the conference. Your transport costs should be covered either by yourself or by the Area or Group, if agreed in advance.

Registration on Saturday 7 March and will be open from 11.00am in the foyer of the conference suite in the hotel followed by a buffet lunch at 12noon - 1pm. The formal business of Scottish Council will commence at 1.15pm.
