This panel will be hosted by Prof Andrew Burn (UCL Institute of Education) and introduced with a short welcome by Editor-in-Chief of the Film Education Journal, Dr Jamie Chambers (Edinburgh College of Art).

Film Education in Palestine
This special panel event will explore the film education work of Filmlab Palestine, a non-governmental organisation that has grown from initial experiences using film to work with young people in refugee camps to become a significant, ambitious and progressive film education organisation – one of the few in the Arab World.
Led by the organisation's founder, Hanna Atallah, and incorporating a series of perspectives across the work of the organisation, including film consultant Charlotte Giese and executive director Ola Salama, this panel will explore Filmlab Palestine's holistic approach to film education, both in terms of watching and making films with young people (6-15-year-olds), but also advocating for and creating new forms of cinema that express Palestinian voices, experiences and sense of place.
This event will be hosted by Prof. Mette Hjort (University of Lincoln)
16.00 - 17.30
The challenges of practical filmmaking in the classroom
Designed by and geared towards teachers, this panel will address some of the challenges faced by educators helping young people make films in school settings. The discussion, led by teachers Jacqueline Thomson (John Paul Academy) and Michael Daly (Drumchapel High), will revolve around concrete examples of student work, and will seek to break down some of the myths and fears on the subject, with the hope of inspiring other teachers to try out their own filmmaking projects in the classroom.
19.30 – 21:00
Filmmaker Keynote: John Sayles (USA)
Legendary American independent filmmaker John Sayles (Matewan, Lone Star, Spirit of Roan Inish) speaks with Dr Jamie Chambers (Editor-in-Chief of the Film Education Journal) about his book Thinking in Pictures, which looks to open up the complexities of filmmaking process for learners.
Friday 17th June
11:00 - 12:30
Academic Keynote: Decolonisation in film studies: Everywhere, Nowhere, Right Here
Building on their pending, multimodal contribution to the Film Education Journal, Dr Berenike Jung (University of Groningen, The Netherlands) and Dr Derilene Marco (University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg) reflect critically on their personal teaching and learning experiences within film education, asking each other about the processes of doing and performing the labour of decolonizing film teaching in their respective courses. Both Jung and Marco also reflect on the ways in which colonial posturing occurs in Film Studies spaces, such as international film conferences, and the repercussions of these dynamics on the scholars who inhabit these spaces.
This keynote event is hosted by Mark Reid (British Film Institute)
14:00-15:30
Co-creating Film Education
This panel reflects on the Professional Practice in Film Education course, run at Queen Margaret University, within a wider discussion of how best classroom teachers may work with practicing filmmakers, and opportunities within Scotland for teachers and film education practitioners to develop their skills may be improved. The panel will feature contributions from Sandie Jamieson (film education practitioner), Becca McSheaffrey (Glasgow Film), Wendy Elrick (Inverurie Academy), and Colette Roddy (Musselburgh Grammar School).
The panel will be chaired by Dr Robert Munro (Queen Margaret University).
16:00 – 17:30
Filmmaker Keynote: Mike Figgis
In the second of our filmmaker keynotes, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas, Internal Affairs, Timecode) talks with Dr Jamie Chambers (Editor-in-Chief of the Film Education Journal) about his own perspectives on film education, drawing upon his book Digital Film-Making and his experiences pushing the boundaries of film form and practice.
19.30 – 21:00
Filmmaker Keynote: Michelangelo Frammartino
The last of our filmmaker keynotes, award-winning Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Frammartino (Le quattro volte, Il buco) talks with Dr Jamie Chambers (Editor-in-Chief of the Film Education Journal) about the place of film education within his own experiences, focusing in particular in his long-term role teaching filmmaking at the University of Bergamo, Italy.
