Event Details

Rural Scotland is home to many diverse businesses from agriculture and commercial forestry to artisan food and drink production and green energy production. Rural Scotland is also the cradle of much of the culture, the history and the landscape that is integral to our tourism offering which generates £8.9 billion for the Scottish economy and is at the heart of many millions of pound of business investment. Rural businesses therefore represent the very bedrock of the Scottish economy.

Yet despite rural businesses, and especially land-based businesses, representing the bedrock of the economy, they can sometimes be overlooked as governments view rural areas from an environmental or social, rather than economic, stance. The creation of a new cabinet post with responsibility for rural economy and connectivity in May 2016 therefore represented a welcome move to re-focus on driving the rural economy forward.

However, one of the key conditions for investment and sustainable economic growth is certainty and in recent times certainty has been in short supply. The decision to leave the EU will mark a pivotal moment in the history of rural Scotland and all rural businesses will be trying to assess the likely impact on them and identify all available options. However, life goes on and our conference will include examples of businesses that are adapting and investing to meet these changing times.

The Scottish Land & Estates’ 2017 spring conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on what the future might hold for rural businesses. Speakers, who will include high profile politicians, policy decision makers, and rural business owners, will, in a mixture of talks and discussion:-

  • Provide an insight into the future of the rural economy.
  •  Identify areas of potential investment
  • Highlight examples of businesses that have overcome challenges or taken innovative approaches toimprove business growth or resilience.
  •  Explore the implications of Brexit for rural businesses.

Our keynote speech will be provided by Fergus Ewing MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy and Connectivity.
