What will this course cover?

In this course, we will be discussing a range of prose fiction and poetry written in English and Scots by Scottish authors.

From the fierce social criticism of writers such as Irvine Welsh and James Kelman through to the satire of Liz Lochhead and the more lyrical writings of Kathleen Jamie and Douglas Dunn, we will be reflecting on a range of questions and ideas.

What innovations in style are made by these writers and why? What common themes do we find arising from these texts? What is each author’s purpose? Vitally, what is the impact of the social and national context on their work?

What will I get out of this course?

By taking this course, you will develop a richer appreciation of Scottish literature and its diverse voices, gaining insight into how writers use style, satire, lyricism, and social critique to respond to national and cultural contexts.

You will strengthen your skills in close reading and critical analysis, learn to identify recurring themes and innovations across prose and poetry, and build confidence in articulating your own interpretations of texts.

Ultimately, you’ll come away with a deeper understanding of how Scottish authors shape and reflect ideas about identity, society, and change.
