Course Content/Objectives

CPD: 14-hour CPD evidence-based blended learning course (includes pre- & post-course self-learning), which is undertaken online using the NHS Health Scotland’s Virtual Learning Environment together with the one day face to face programme. It is delivered by a SMHFA:YP instructor

The course is designed for adults who support young people between the ages of 11-17, to teach you to better understand mental health and how it affects young people. The course will provide delegates with a clear understanding and practical application of the Scottish Mental Health First Aid skills, giving participants’ confidence in approaching a young person in distress. The course aims to:

  • show how Mental Health First Aid can be applied in a crisis situation with young people
  • reduce stigma around mental health issues for young people
  • enable participants to provide initial support to young people in crisis
  • recognise and promote understanding of common mental health problems, including: depression and anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, suicide and substance misuse.

Mental Health First Aid is an initial response to distress and all participants on the course will understand that this help is given to support young people in crisis only until other suitable or professional help can be found.

The three parts to the course are:

Part 1:  self-study module online - 3 hours

Part 2:  one day face to face training - 7 hours

Part 3: self-study module online - 4 hours

An email with instructions how to register and create your own Virtual Learning Environment will be sent to you by the trainer. This will enable you to start working on part 1 of the course which must be completed within a set timescale, usually 6 weeks before your attendance at part 2. Once you have completed part 1 and the assessment you can then attend part 2 which is the practical skills training day. Part 3 online should then be completed within 4 weeks of part 2. Please ensure that the email address you have on your application is accurate otherwise this could delay your enrolment. A CPD certificate will only be issued if all 3 parts of the course have been completed.
