A hands-on workshop exploring camera-less filmmaking. Drawing, painting and scratching directly onto film to create projected 16mm loops

About this event

Scratch Loop Film Animation is a hands-on workshop covering the principals of camera-less filmmaking and scratch loop animation. This is a practical workshop giving you the opportunity to learn about experimental animation techniques, working directly onto celluloid and projecting the results. You will learn how to make hand painted and scratched animations, beat match your work to a sound track, splice and join film loops, lace a 16mm film projector and project your loops.

Who’s it for? This workshop is for anybody over 18 - no previous experience is needed! If you’re interested in learning about Scratch Loop Animation then this is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience and learn techniques from experienced devotees of the craft.

We provide: We provide all the materials needed to create your own 16mm scratch loop animation: light box; celluloid; inks; bleaches; punches; splicers and film projectors.

Please be aware that this activity involves dyes and inks – wear old clothes!

Bring: We encourage you to document your work and results so please bring a camera or camera phone. If you have your own materials such as pens, hole punches, stamps, letraset etc, then bring them along.

At the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Create a simple Scratch Loop Animation on 16mm film that you can take home.
  • Understand the pacing and relationship between film frames and the sound track.
  • Splice a film loop and lace it onto a film projector.
  • You will have captured your show for future use and editing.
