Screened/ King Of Comedy (Scorsese, De Niro)
Thu 27 April 2017, 19:00 – 22:00 BST
We are really excited to announce that on Thursday 27th April we will be showing the underrated Scorsese and De Niro classic King of Comedy (1983)
Considered by some the spiritual successor to Taxi Driver in its portrayal of an obsessive loner, Robert De Niro plays Rupert Pupkin, a deranged, potentially psychopathic autograph hunter and amateur stand up who obsesses over celebrity, fame and in particular talk show host Jerry Langford (played magnificently by Jerry Lewis).
Along with its prescient portrayal of obsessive celebrity culture, it is also very, very funny film ‘perfect pitched between satire and horror’ (Mark Kermode). It is a real pleasure to be bringing the movie to Screened/ MCR.
Joining us on the evening will be Pete Deakin, Lecturer in Film Studies at Salford University
