Description

Hello,

for the 9th Screened, and because of how close it is to the festive period we would like to throw a special event, looking back at the early ages of cinema – Silent Film!

For this event we will have;

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

Directed by Robert Wiene and released in 1920 The Cabinet of Dr Calligari is considered the quintessential classic of German Expressionist cinema. the film tells the story of insane hypnotist Dr Caligari who manipulates sleepwalker Cesare into committing murders in shadowy Holstenwall and is considered by Roget Ebert to be the first true horror film.

The film explores themes of authority and its exercise over the common man often for wicked means. These themes were driven by the scriptwriters (Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer) experiences during World War 1. Technically Wiene’s use of sharp dark angles and shadows the film went onto influence the film noir’s of the 1940’s and still has an influence today.

Dr Caligari is a genuine classic of silent cinema and we are really excited for it to be the main feature at our Screened/ Silent Film event.

“Thankfully, in Battiwalla’s experienced hands [the] score is adept and varied, throwing in shades of church and carnival along the way”

We are really, really excited!
