Event description

Description

Refugees Welcome NI in association with Belfast Pride 2017 present a free screening of Last Chance with a discussion to follow.

This feature documentary (2012) directed by Paul Émile d'Entremont tells the stories of five asylum seekers who flee their native countries to escape homophobic violence. They face hurdles integrating into Canada, fear deportation and anxiously await a decision that will change their lives forever.

The film will be introduced by some of the Refugees Welcome NI team and the screening will be followed by a short discussion.

"The persecution of people because of their sexual orientation and gender identity is not a new phenomenon. It is only in more recent years that a growing number of asylum claims have been made by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) individuals. This has necessitated greater awareness among decision-makers of the specific experiences of LGBTI asylum-seekers and a deeper examination of the legal questions involved." UNHCR

Refugees Welcome NI is a grassroots organisation that harnesses the goodwill of local people who want to make a difference to the lives of refugees and asylum seekers living in N. Ireland. We introduce people with a spare room in their homes to people who are refugees and asylum seekers who need accommodation.
