Screening: Promised Land
Sat 13 February 2016, 19:30 – 22:00 GMT
Screening of Promised Land as part of our theme Environmental Adversity. A film that highlights the concerns about the resource extraction process hydraulic fracturing, colloquially known as fracking and how this can affect the lives of the people living on and using this land. Corporate salesman Steve Butler (Matt Damon) arrives in a rural town with his sales partner. With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company's offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. But the people slowly realize the possible consequences if they sign away their land.
The film will be folloed by a Q&A about the effects of fracking with Oxford Friends of the Earth.
